Ischemic heart disease is the reason behind many deaths and hospital admissions in the U.S. This is characterized by the insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle and the underlying cause of which is Coronary Artery Disease or CAD. A person suffering from ischemic heart disease is at high risk of experiencing a myocardial infarction or heart attack which is why patients must address the situation as soon as possible.

Watching what they eat, taking maintenance drugs, and having an ample amount of exercise are some of the necessary precautions a person suffering from ischemic heart disease must take.

Ischemic heart disease is one of the major causes of death in both men and women in the united states, which is why patients that are diagnosed with this condition have to address it by also treating its underlying cause, CAD.

CAD is the condition where arterial walls of the heart are blocked due to plaque build-up, this is caused by atherosclerosis and is this condition that deprives the heart of an ample amount of blood supply. Because atherosclerosis is the major underlying cause of CAD and ischemic heart disease, it would be beneficial to learn more about this condition so it can be addressed properly.

Atherosclerosis occurs when the walls of our blood vessels are covered with plaque. The main cause of this problem is having elevated levels of cholesterol in our bloodstream. Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in our blood vessels that helps regulate bodily functions. The thing is, having elevated levels of cholesterol in our blood causes atherosclerosis among other things.

The constant build-up of plaque on the walls of our blood vessels will eventually result in total blockage, hardening, and death of our blood vessels; if this happens on a major artery the result would be a myocardial infarction, generally known as a heart attack.

The good news is that this can be prevented or even reversed with a healthy lifestyle and medication. So if a patient is suffering from ischemic heart disease it would be highly recommended to address atherosclerosis by watching what they eat and regulate the cholesterol levels in the patient’s body.
