Heart disease is recognized as the number one killer of both men and women in the United States, this is a persistent and alarming fact. What then can we do to address the increasing number of people who get affected by this disease? Recognizing the causes of heart disease can give us a better idea of how to minimize the increasing number of deaths.

One of the major causes of heart disease is diet. A good number of individuals are fostering unhealthy diets and have forgotten how to eat right. One main reason why this is happening is that the type of food that is readily available is mostly high in fat; it’s difficult to run into healthy food that tastes good nowadays. The overwhelming temptation of unhealthy food can be too much to bear, so people end up eating instant yet unhealthy food; this practice is one of the root causes of heart disease.

Not being able to exercise regularly is also one of the main causes of heart disease. A good number of people have grown to accept inactive lifestyles and this has triggered high levels of cholesterol amongst them. Cholesterol is the culprit to most, if not all, heart-related conditions and can be considered one of the main causes of heart disease. Having elevated levels of cholesterol in our bloodstream will eventually lead to atherosclerosis, if this condition is left untreated, it increases the risk of experiencing a heart attack. Exercising allows the body to burn excess fat which in turn lowers our total cholesterol levels.

Not getting enough sleep is also considered as one of the main causes of heart disease. Having good sleeping habits lowers the stress levels of your body, it also allows your body to recuperate and gain strength so you are ready for the day ahead. Lack of sleep often leads to increased levels of stress. A person experiencing high levels of stress will most probably have high blood pressure, which can result in heart disease if left untreated.

Knowing the causes of heart disease will hopefully make us realize the necessary solutions to decrease the risk of acquiring this dreaded disease.
